Job Summary

The Librarian is responsible for providing leadership and management for the Authority’s library/ resource center to both internal and external users, assist with finding information on alcohol and drug abuse and providing reader’s advisory services.

Duties and Responsibilities

Specific responsibilities of the Librarian/ Documentalist include:

•Coding, classification, and cataloging of books, publications, films, audiovisual aids, and other library materials based on subject matter or standard library classification systems;

•Installing and maintaining bibliographic and retrieval system of Alcohol & Drug Abuse(ADA) resource materials;

•Check books in and out of the library and keep records of circulation and materials.

•Develop library policies and procedures;

•Review and evaluate resource material, such as book reviews and catalogs, in order to select and order print, audiovisual, and electronic resources;

•Maintenance and development of library collection by reviewing existing collection and evaluating current and potential service needs. 

•Design information storage and retrieval systems, and develop procedures for collecting, organizing, interpreting, and     classifying information;

•Assisting library users in retrieval of information; 

•Direct and train library staff in duties such as receiving, shelving, researching, cataloging, and equipment use;

•Evaluate materials to determine outdated or unused items to be boarded;

•Compile lists of overdue materials, and notify borrowers that their materials are overdue;

•Assist with the acquisition of new materials and monitoring journal subscriptions;

•Ensure that the services to library users are at the required level and that all user complaints are addressed;

•Collect and maintain statistical data and records and preparing summary reports to keep the management aware  of library usage and needs;

•Contribute ideas about the future development of the resource centre;

•To prepare monthly and quarterly progress reports;

•Perform any other duties as may be assigned from time to time by the Manager Communications and Documentation.

Qualifications and Competencies

•Bachelor’s degree in Library & Information Studies; 

•Higher National Diploma in Library & Information Studies is an added advantage;

•Minimum 5 years experience in a similar position in a busy institution;

•Knowledge of various library cataloging and classification systems, library practices, procedures, and techniques;

•Excellent ICT skills in the provision of library and information services and the ability to use all library equipment;

•Ability to work under minimal supervision;

•Must posses excellent  communication  skills (both oral and written) and a team player;

•Sound knowledge of relevant laws, government regulations and policies;

•Excellent computer skills and knowledge of statistical application packages.
