1.    Who is NACADA?

The National Authority for Campaign against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) was established by an Act of Parliament in July 2012. The Authority’s core function is to coordinate a mulch-sectoral public education and awareness campaign against alcohol and drug abuse in Kenya.

Previously, the Authority was known as the National Campaign Against Drug Abuse Authority established vide Legal Notice No. 140 of 2007.

2.    What is government doing to help those who are addicted?

The Government of Kenya (GoK) has recognised the threat posed by drugs and substance abuse and has sought to enact a legal and institutional framework within which the vice can be fought.
To directly assist those addicted to drugs the government given NACADA the mandate, among other things;

  •  In collaboration with other lead agencies, providing and facilitating the development and operation of rehabilitation facilities, programmes and standards for persons with substance use disorders;
  •  Subject to any other written law to license and regulate operation of rehabilitation facilities for persons with substance use disorders;
  •  In collaboration with other public and private agencies, facilitating, conducting, promoting and coordinating research and dissemination of findings on data on alcohol and drug abuse and serve as the repository of such data.

Alcohol, tobacco, bhang, miraa.

4.    What are the classifications of drugs

Narcotics, hallucinogens, depressants, stimulants, cannabis, volatile solvents

5.    What are the biological names of different drugs

  • Cannabis sativa- bhang
  • Catha edulis-miraa
  • Papaver- poppy(opium, heroine)
  • Erythroxylon coca- coca(cocaine)
  • Coffea- coffee(caffeine)
  • Nicotiana- tobacco(nicotine)


6.    What is the relationship between alcohol, substance abuse & HIV/AIDS

Alcohol inhibits sense of prohibition. People end up engaging in unprotected sex. The use of syringes by Injecting Drug Users infuriates HIV contraction.

7.    Is it true that bhang takes 7 years in the brain

NO. It takes two days to eleven weeks, although this varies depending on body mass index, to heavy smokers, it can be detected 30 days after.

8.    What is NACADA doing on the issue of rehabilitation centres especially in rural areas?

As part of the strategic plan, NACADA has committed itself to:
I.    Establish institutional and community based counseling, treatment and rehabilitation services
II.    Develop national standards for treatment and rehabilitation services for chemically dependent persons. This will include among other activities;

  •  Developing certification criteria for practitioners in ADA treatment and rehabilitation,
  •  Preparing and maintain a register of licensed practitioners
